FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and announced a restriction of movement across the Federal Capital Territory from 8pm Friday through 6pm Saturday, ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21.
Wike made the announcements in a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations on Thursday, citing President Bola Tinubu’s approval for both directives. He called on FCT residents to turn out in large numbers to vote for candidates of their choice, while urging them to conduct themselves in an orderly and lawful manner throughout the electoral process.
“Let us respect the rules, respect each other, and respect the outcome of the election,” the Minister said, adding that Nigerians must demonstrate to the world that they are a mature and responsible electorate.
All security agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the movement restriction order.
Wike also used the occasion to commend President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions and making electoral processes more transparent and credible.
Saturday’s elections will determine new or returning Chairmen and Councilors across the six FCT Area Councils.
