The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has committed to covering all medical expenses for the victims of Wednesday’s tragic accident near Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Mr. Lere Olayinka, Wike expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as “avoidable.”
He extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured that those injured would receive prompt medical attention. He directed the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, to oversee the treatment of the injured.
Following Wike’s directive, Fasawe visited Asokoro District Hospital, where 17 casualties were taken. Seven were later referred to the National Hospital, while six with minor injuries were treated and discharged. Three victims with severe burns and crush injuries remain in critical care, with one succumbing to third-degree burns during resuscitation.
Wike emphasized the need for stricter traffic law enforcement, especially for heavy-duty vehicle drivers, urging them to adhere to speed limits. He called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other agencies to intensify efforts in ensuring road safety.
The accident, which was caused by a truck losing control and crashing into multiple vehicles, resulted in a massive explosion, claiming 10 lives and leaving over 30 others injured.
