Nigeria’s Super Eagles have handed the captain’s armband to midfielder Wilfred Ndidi after the international retirements of Ahmed Musa and William Troost-Ekong.
Ndidi, who has previously worn the armband as stand-in captain on multiple occasions, now steps into the role permanently following the departures of the Kano Pillars general manager and Al Khoolood defender from national team duty.
The Leicester City midfielder acknowledged the weight of his new position, stating: “It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, everything will go smoothly.”
As the Super Eagles prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations, Ndidi outlined his leadership approach and the team’s focus. “I have had conversations with the players, trying to make them understand the reason why we are here. We also need support from the staff and to have conversations about what’s ahead. It is very important that everyone is on the same page,” he explained.
Ndidi was quick to honor his predecessor, offering warm words about Troost-Ekong’s impact on the squad. “He is a great leader, he speaks for the team, he stands for the team. I admire him a lot. How outspoken he is. He is one person everyone looks up to. He is an amazing guy. I have learnt a lot from him,” Ndidi said.
The new captain revealed that the bond between them remains strong despite the retirement. “We spoke a couple of weeks ago, still chipped in some advice. I feel he is still part of the team. He is going to be missed,” Ndidi added.
