ABUJA, Nigeria – A prominent political commentator has made a public appeal for opposition leaders to form a strategic alliance ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, calling on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step aside in favor of a Kwankwaso-Obi presidential ticket.
Aliyu Ak Balarabe, a youth advocate and political commentator, issued the statement as Nigeria approaches what he described as a “critical crossroads” in the lead-up to the next electoral cycle. In his appeal, Balarabe urged Atiku Abubakar to support Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as the presidential candidate, with Peter Obi serving as his running mate.
“This strategic alliance remains, in my honest view, the most formidable and credible force capable of rescuing our dear nation from the continued misrule of the APC,” Balarabe stated in his public commentary.
The proposal comes as opposition parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 contest against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Balarabe emphasized that his call was motivated by national interest rather than personal political ambition, arguing that such an alliance would provide Nigerians with “the leadership they truly deserve.”
The suggested ticket would bring together two significant political figures from Nigeria’s opposition landscape. Senator Kwankwaso, a former Governor of Kano State, leads the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), while Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, emerged as a major political force in the last election cycle.
“Nigeria must come first. And history will be kind to those who choose country over self,” Balarabe concluded in his statement, framing the appeal as a patriotic call for unity among opposition forces.
