Ahmadu Fintiri has reiterated his support for power rotation ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the presidency should remain in the South to complete an eight-year cycle.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television on Tuesday, the Adamawa State governor maintained that although the constitution allows any qualified Nigerian to contest, fairness and national unity demand that the South retains the office for now.
“There is no business of anybody in the North concerning the presidency at this time. It is the turn of the South. If we are serious about building a united country, they should be allowed to complete their eight years so that we can all see ourselves as our brother’s keeper,” he said.
Fintiri, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), threw his weight behind President Bola Tinubu, urging support for his administration.
According to him, backing Tinubu’s second term bid would ensure policy continuity and national stability. He praised the president’s reforms, saying they are beginning to yield positive results and provide hope for the country.
Among prominent figures preparing for the 2027 race is former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who hails from Adamawa State. The 79-year-old politician, who flew the PDP flag in the 2023 presidential election, has since joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition as he pursues his long-standing presidential ambition.
Despite political differences, Fintiri said his relationship with Atiku remains cordial.
“There is nothing wrong between us. Everyone has chosen their political path. I am in the APC today; they are in another party,” the governor stated.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s stability should take precedence over individual ambitions, stressing that zoning the presidency promotes balance and unity.
“If there is no other candidate, we should support Bola Tinubu to complete his tenure. After that, power can rotate again,” he added.
