Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended a 26-year-old secondary school teacher suspected of threatening to kill former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi following a deadly attack on his convoy in Benin City, Edo State.
Obi, alongside former Edo State Governor Chief John Oyegun and several All Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders, narrowly escaped death on February 24 when gunmen opened fire on their party gathering in Benin.
Within hours of the attack, a man identified as Udeme Monday Stephen took to his X account (@stevetom788) to claim responsibility and issue chilling warnings of further violence. In his posts, Stephen taunted Obi, saying the former presidential candidate was fortunate to have survived the Benin attack — but would not be so lucky a second time.
“We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo State, but he mistook our resolve for his Obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he survived this one,” Stephen allegedly wrote. He went further to threaten that associates in Rivers State would handle Obi during an upcoming visit, adding menacingly: “Dem no dey miss target.”
A senior security source told our correspondent that DSS operatives launched an immediate covert investigation upon seeing the online threats, deploying forensic tools to trace the poster’s identity and location.
The suspect was tracked to Eliozu, Rivers State, where he reportedly works as a teacher at Jessica High School in the Umuehere Community, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
“As a responsible security organisation saddled with counter-espionage and VIP protection duties, the DSS is always alive to its responsibilities,” the source said, confirming that Stephen is now in custody and will soon face criminal charges in court.
