Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association (FOBTOB) is calling for unity among Nigerian workers amid the current economic challenges.
The union recently urged workers in the nation to take over the civic space and ensure that their voices are loud enough to be heard by the politicians in power.
In his goodwill message to mark 2025’s May Day, the President of the union, Comrade Jimoh Oyibo, revealed that Nigerian employees should never stop demanding transparency and accountability from the country’s leaders.
According to him, workers cannot afford to stop advocating for policies that will address the needs of employees scattered across the nation, because only the right policies can aid industrial harmony, improve social protection, and guarantee sustainable livelihoods.
“By uniting our efforts, we can dismantle barriers and construct a civic space where worker, regardless of their position or sector, feel valued and empowered. Moreover, reclaiming our civic space necessitates an unwavering commitment to championing the rights of all workers, particularly in sectors where inequalities are most glaring. We must express our solidarity not only to our teeming members, but also those in precarious employment, facing heightened struggles,” he said.
Oyibo then praised members of the association for their courage to keep going regardless of the economic challenges they constantly contend with, while urging Nigerians to remain dedicated to ensuring Nigeria returns to its era of economic development.
“As a Union, we must engage all stakeholders constructively (employers, regulators, and government), to shape policies that promote industrial harmony, enhance social protection, and ensure sustainable livelihoods.
As we look into the future, may this May Day reignite a collective sense of mission and a renewed determination to forge a future characterised by decent work, inclusive growth and social justice,” he added.
