In a bid to revamp its market strategy and reposition for the future, the 4th-largest telecommunication company in the country, 9mobile, has officially rebranded to T2.
The rebranding went down at a high-profile corporate gathering themed “Tech Meets Tenacity” at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, and it signified the operator’s entry into a fresh era of customer-focused service, growth and resilience.
According to 9mobile’s Chief Executive Officer, Obafemi Banigbe, the company is completely evolving what 9mobile is all about, what it represents and how value is delivered to consumers.
“This is not just a logo change; it’s a total evolution of who we are, why we exist, and how we deliver value. T2 represents our renewed commitment to innovation, resilience, and a deepened focus on customer experience. We are building a brand ready to thrive in the digital economy,” he said.
To simplify its rebranding process after the 2023 purchase of 9mobile by Lighthouse Telecoms, the telecom company set up a 4-phrase recovery roadmap – Modernisation, Transformation, Stabilisation and Growth.
As soon as the takeover was complete, various reforms were initiated, including a more vibrant board, a brand new executive leadership, and a praiseworthy infrastructure-sharing agreement with MTN Nigeria.
The roaming collaboration, the first of its kind in the whole of Nigeria, has already widened T2’s network reach and capacity across the nation.
The company recently survived a troubling period that resulted in 9mobile taking severe hits that practically rendered it irrelevant among Nigerians; therefore, this transformation is long overdue.
After rebranding to 9mobile due to investor exits, the company battled financial limitations, infrastructure decline, which led to a rapid decrease in its number of active subscribers, from more than 22 million to about to 2.44 million by June 2025.
Its new T2 identity is meant to change the fortunes of the company, with the sole aim of aiding digital lifestyle, guaranteeing speed/smart living and earning customer trust.
According to the Chairman, T2 Nigeria, Thomas Etuh, his love for Nigeria prompted him to acquire 9mobile.
Appreciating the customers for their consistent faith in the brand, he vowed to ensure T2 reclaims all it has lost in the near future.
“Today marks a new beginning for the 9mobile business. The march has been tedious. The journey has been exhausting. It was faith and love for country that prompted my foray into the acquisition.
To our amazing customers, thank you for believing in us. We are rising together again—reclaiming all lost grounds,” he said.
Reacting, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, hailed T2’s bold step, urging the brand to ensure the switch is more than just a design change.
“Let this rebrand be a renewed commitment to innovation, service excellence, and to the millions of Nigerians whose lives and businesses depend on your network. The future belongs to those who embrace change before it’s forced upon them,” Bosun said.
Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Barr. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin emphasised the connection between T2’s transformation plan and Lagos State’s digital transformation agenda
“T2’s focus on digital innovation aligns seamlessly with our vision for a robust digital economy that empowers citizens, businesses, and communities,” she disclosed.
The transition to T2 will be done gradually to make sure existing subscribers aren’t affected negatively. New services and better customer experiences are the minimum expectation because the brand’s 4 main pillars – Speed, Smart Living, Digital Lifestyle, and Trust – will go a long way towards delivering product innovation, customer engagement, and network development.
Obafemi Banigbe reiterated that T2 does not intend to “play catch-up” with its rivals, stressing that the aim is to be a leader in the telecom industry as soon as possible.
He insisted that the rebrand, backed by a strategy of infrastructure collaborations, service quality improvements, and robust brand revamp, will position T2 as a force to reckon with in Nigeria’s telecom sector.
The journey from Etisalat to 9mobile and now to T2 has been a lesson-filled story that epitomizes endurance, reinvention, and ambition.
With effective leadership, stakeholder backing, and a futuristic vision, T2 is about to be a household name again, while reclaiming its spot as a leading force in the country’s telecommunications landscape.
