A seemingly peaceful rapprochement between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has dramatically unravelled, with both men now locked in a heated exchange following Fayose’s attendance at Obasanjo’s recent birthday celebration.
The fallout, revealed Monday by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, centres on an inflammatory text message Fayose sent to the former president after the Ekiti event, a message that quickly devolved from gratitude into a blistering personal attack.
Just days earlier, the two political heavyweights had appeared to end their 19-year feud when Fayose visited Obasanjo’s Abeokuta residence. Photographs showing them exchanging warm smiles and friendly gestures fueled widespread speculation about a possible political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, sources close to the encounter told APPLES BITE MAGAZINE that during the birthday celebration in Ekiti, Obasanjo made pointed jokes and remarks about Fayose’s political history that deeply offended the former governor.
The Explosive Text Message
What began as a “thank you” message reportedly transformed into a vitriolic tirade. According to Akinyemi, Fayose accused Obasanjo of making “very irresponsible comments” at the function.
“I kept quiet or did not reply to you at the function so that the world will know the difference between a sane and a mad man that you are,” Fayose allegedly wrote.
The former governor went further, claiming Obasanjo was suffering from “the heightened stage of dementia” and asserting: “It is also obvious that you have lost your sanity.”
Fayose also demanded repayment of money he claimed Obasanjo had publicly acknowledged receiving, stating: “I shall appreciate if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received but Dangote brought you back.”
Obasanjo’s Terse Response
The former president responded with characteristic brevity and firmness, dismissing Fayose’s outburst as confirmation of his unchanged character.
“Ayo, thanks for your ‘Thank You’ message which undisguisedly revealed who and what you are, unchanged and unchangeable,” Obasanjo wrote.
He confirmed returning the disputed funds intact: “Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo who brought it and in the same bag as he brought it, unopened by me.”
