Millions of Igbo speakers in southeastern Nigeria and beyond saw their language honored at the Vatican’s Christmas Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve, when prayers were offered in Igbo during the solemn service at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Pope Leo XIV presided over the historic liturgy, which featured an Igbo prayer and the participation of an Igbo couple in the Eucharistic procession. The couple presented offertory gifts at the altar, marking a meaningful moment of cultural representation at one of the Church’s most significant annual celebrations.
