Millions of Igbo speakers in southeastern Nigeria and beyond saw their language honored at the Vatican’s Christmas Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve, when prayers were offered in Igbo during the solemn service at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Pope Leo XIV presided over the historic liturgy, which featured an Igbo prayer and the participation of an Igbo couple in the Eucharistic procession. The couple presented offertory gifts at the altar, marking a meaningful moment of cultural representation at one of the Church’s most significant annual celebrations.
The evening’s events highlighted the Catholic Church’s embrace of its worldwide membership, bringing together faithful from diverse cultures and nations in a shared celebration. The integration of Igbo language and traditions into the Christmas Vigil Mass reinforced core themes of unity and inclusiveness central to the holiday’s spiritual message.
Nigerian Catholics and Igbo communities around the world welcomed the recognition as an affirming moment that reflects Africa’s expanding role in the global Catholic Church.
