Nigeria recorded a significant drop in inflation during December 2025, with the headline rate falling to 15.15 percent from November’s 17.33 percent, marking a 2.18 percentage point decline, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The latest Consumer Price Index report reveals that inflation has declined substantially from the 34.8 percent recorded in December 2024, reflecting improved price stability across the economy.
Monthly inflation also moderated, standing at 0.54 percent in December compared to 1.22 percent in November—a 0.69 percentage point reduction that suggests prices are rising at a slower pace.
The NBS attributed some projected fluctuations in December’s data to recent methodological adjustments in calculating the CPI, stressing that these technical changes do not indicate economic deterioration.
Food inflation showed particularly dramatic improvement. The year-on-year rate dropped to 10.84 percent in December 2025 from 39.84 percent the previous year, driven primarily by lower prices for essential items including tomatoes, garri, eggs, potatoes, carrots, vegetables, beans, and onions.
Regional variations persisted, with Yobe state recording the highest annual food inflation at 15.25 percent, followed by Ogun at 14.12 percent and Abuja at 13.24 percent. Conversely, Akwa Ibom reported the lowest rate at 4.34 percent, alongside Sokoto at 4.62 percent and Plateau at 6.19 percent.
Monthly food price changes varied widely by state. Imo led with 3.19 percent, while Plateau, Rivers, and Zamfara actually saw prices decline by 2.76 percent, 2.5 percent, and 1.93 percent respectively.
The data points to sustained easing of price pressures nationwide, offering relief to consumers and encouraging signs for economic policymakers addressing inflation challenges.
