The Alaafin of Oyo’s Palace has disputed Governor Seyi Makinde’s account of consultations preceding Thursday’s inauguration of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, as chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
Governor Makinde installed Oba Ladoja, Arusa I, to lead the traditional council in Ibadan, announcing that leadership would rotate among three major traditional rulers in the state.
The Alaafin’s Palace issued a sharp rebuttal through Chief Press Secretary Bode Durojaiye, challenging the governor’s assertion that he had consulted with the Alaafin, Olubadan, and Soun of Ogbomoso before implementing the rotational arrangement.
“There was no time that His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba (Engr.) Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, held any meeting with either the State Governor or any of the two traditional rulers mentioned on this issue,” the statement declared.
The Palace emphasized that the Alaafin never endorsed the rotational chairmanship concept and noted that Oyo’s official position had already been submitted to the governor through a memorandum from the Oyo Council of Elders.
The disagreement highlights tensions over traditional authority structures in Oyo State, where questions of precedence among major traditional rulers remain contentious.
