Ayodele Fayose, who previously served as Ekiti State’s governor, has suggested that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s public criticism of President Bola Tinubu grew sharper after an attempt to repair their political relationship proved unsuccessful.
In a Saturday statement, Fayose contended that Makinde’s remarks about the current administration—delivered at former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s birthday celebration—reflected frustration following what he characterized as an unsatisfactory meeting at the Presidential Villa.
Fayose claimed Makinde had sought to rebuild political bridges with President Tinubu but came away dissatisfied with how the meeting unfolded.
“Governor Makinde visited the president hoping to address tensions created by his previous statements, but the meeting did not produce the results he anticipated,” Fayose stated.
The former governor went on to allege that during their discussion, President Tinubu indicated he would throw his support behind All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in Oyo State for the 2027 elections.
This development, according to Fayose, may explain Makinde’s increasingly critical stance toward the federal government. He suggested the governor’s public statements challenging President Tinubu emerged as a response to what he perceived as failed reconciliation attempts.
Fayose also maintained that Makinde’s comparisons between the Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari administrations would likely have been avoided if the Villa meeting had gone differently.
Additionally, Fayose called on the APC in Oyo State to strengthen its political groundwork, claiming that Makinde might support a candidate from outside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in upcoming elections.
Governor Makinde had not issued a public response to these allegations at the time of publication.
