Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) has rolled out a drone-based surveillance system to bolster security along the Trans Niger Pipeline (TNP), a critical artery within the Eastern Corridor pipeline network. The initiative combines aerial technology with trained security personnel to enable early threat detection and safer pipeline operations across host communities in four states.
Field operations are anchored by a network of strategic camps spread across the pipeline corridor. These include Camp 20 in Abia State, Camps 07 and 05 in Rivers State, Camp 12 in Bayelsa State, and Camp 29 in Imo State. Each camp houses dedicated security teams tasked with monitoring pipeline activity and responding swiftly to emerging threats on the ground.
Complementing these fixed positions is a mobile drone station that can be rapidly repositioned to high-risk zones as situations develop. The roving unit provides aerial intelligence on demand, enabling operators to track suspicious activity, conduct rapid inspections, and reinforce ground teams during patrols or emergency responses without being tied to a single location.
Overseeing the entire network is a classified command and control facility that tracks more than 30 live drone feeds simultaneously, around the clock. Security analysts at the center continuously review real-time visuals from across all camps and surveillance units, enabling faster decision-making and more coordinated deployment of response teams when threats are identified.
Spanning Rivers, Abia, Imo, and Bayelsa states, the multi-layered system integrates drone surveillance, mobile units, and centralized monitoring into a unified security framework. PINL says the approach is designed to curb pipeline vandalism, safeguard national oil assets, and ensure the uninterrupted flow of crude through the Trans Niger Pipeline network.
