President Bola Tinubu has said that some individuals affected by his administration’s economic reforms are so displeased with his policies that they wish him dead.
Speaking on Wednesday, May 20, at the launch of “The NADECO Story” in Lagos, the President said the removal of petrol subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange rates had disrupted entrenched interests that previously benefited from the old system.
He noted that these reforms had unsettled powerful groups involved in forex round-tripping and subsidy exploitation, adding that such persons were now allegedly plotting to undermine national stability.
Tinubu was represented at the event by former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, who delivered his remarks to the audience of pro-democracy figures and dignitaries gathered under the umbrella of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).
According to Osoba, the President expressed awareness of attempts by those “offended” by the reforms to create unrest in the country, particularly through economic sabotage linked to the now-removed subsidy regime and foreign exchange system.
He said Tinubu maintained that despite resistance, his administration would continue implementing reforms aimed at restructuring the economy.
The President also reiterated that the gap between the official and parallel foreign exchange markets had significantly narrowed since the introduction of the new FX policy, insisting that the naira was stabilising compared to earlier projections of sharp depreciation.
Osoba further conveyed Tinubu’s position that the country’s security challenges and economic stability remain top priorities of his administration, warning that insecurity was gradually spreading into the South-West and must be contained.
Tinubu also used the occasion to commend NADECO members and other pro-democracy activists for their sacrifices in restoring democratic governance to Nigeria, assuring that their contributions would not be forgotten.
He added that if re-elected, his administration would deepen political and governance reforms while consolidating gains made in the economy and security sectors.
The event attracted several prominent Nigerians, including Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, traditional rulers, senior advocates, activists, publishers, and other notable figures from the political and cultural space.
