FIFA has come under scrutiny after introducing a new policy that prohibits fans from bringing refillable water bottles into stadiums during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision, announced just days before the tournament kicks off across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, means supporters will no longer be allowed to carry reusable water bottles into match venues and may have to purchase bottled water inside stadiums or depend on designated hydration points.

The move represents a significant shift from FIFA’s previous stadium regulations, which had permitted spectators to bring empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles with a capacity of up to one litre.

Only last month, FIFA’s stadium code of conduct clearly stated that fans could carry empty reusable plastic bottles into venues. However, the governing body has now revised the guideline, explicitly banning reusable water bottles from all World Cup stadiums.

Under the updated rules, spectators attending matches will need to rely on bottled water sold within stadium premises or make use of hydration stations provided around the venues.

The policy change has sparked concerns among supporters and health advocates, particularly because several matches are expected to take place in regions that could experience high temperatures during the tournament.

Explaining the decision, FIFA said the ban was introduced primarily for safety reasons. According to the football governing body, some of the stadiums selected for the tournament already enforce restrictions on outside bottles, prompting FIFA to implement a uniform policy across all host venues.

A FIFA spokesperson stated that the organization remains committed to safeguarding players, match officials, fans, volunteers, and staff throughout the competition. The spokesperson added that prohibiting bottles would help reduce the risk of injuries or security incidents involving objects thrown within stadiums.

To address concerns about dehydration and heat exposure, FIFA has promised to provide several cooling and hydration measures around stadium facilities. These include hydration stations, misting areas, cooling tents, and fans positioned throughout designated stadium zones.

The organization also assured supporters that bottled water sold inside venues would be priced in line with rates charged during other major events hosted at the same stadiums.

Despite these assurances, critics argue that the policy could increase costs for fans already facing significant expenses related to travel, accommodation, and match tickets.

The decision has also reignited concerns about heat-related health risks during the expanded 2026 World Cup. Climate experts have previously warned that a number of matches could be played under challenging weather conditions.

A recent report by the World Weather Attribution research group estimated that 26 of the tournament’s 104 matches could take place in environments where the Wet Bulb Global Temperature exceeds 26 degrees Celsius—a level associated with elevated heat stress risks.

The Wet Bulb Global Temperature index measures the combined effects of temperature, humidity, wind speed, and sunlight on the human body and is widely used to assess heat-related health risks.

Similar concerns emerged during the FIFA Club World Cup held in the United States last year, where fans reported discomfort due to extreme temperatures. Spectators at that competition were likewise prohibited from bringing water bottles into stadiums.

With the tournament expected to attract millions of supporters from around the world, the new policy is likely to remain a topic of debate as fans weigh safety considerations against convenience, hydration needs, and rising event costs.
