The re-election of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has intensified political maneuvering around the governor ahead of the 2027 general elections, with both the Presidency and opposition forces reportedly seeking his support.
Adeleke secured victory in Saturday’s governorship election, defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and extending his hold on the state.
The outcome has heightened interest in Adeleke’s political alignment, particularly as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under which he won his first term, continues to face internal divisions.
Forces within President Bola Tinubu’s camp are expected to seek Adeleke’s commitment to the President’s 2027 re-election bid. The governor had previously expressed support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition despite belonging to the opposition PDP.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, was among those who publicly reminded Adeleke of his reported commitment to support Tinubu in 2027.
“Thank you, Governor Ademola Adeleke, for the public and unequivocal endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 Presidential Election,” Keyamo said, adding, “Agreement is agreement.”
However, Adeleke’s decisive victory in Osun has also attracted the attention of opposition groups, who see the election as a possible model for challenging the ruling APC in the 2027 presidential election.
Opposition figures have particularly highlighted the vigilance of Osun voters during the collation of results, arguing that sustained public monitoring of the electoral process helped protect the integrity of the outcome.
The development has consequently increased speculation over Adeleke’s eventual political direction, especially given the uncertainty surrounding the PDP and the emergence of alternative opposition platforms ahead of 2027.
While the APC may seek to capitalise on Adeleke’s previous endorsement of Tinubu, opposition parties are expected to intensify their engagement with the governor and explore ways of replicating what they regard as the “Osun template” in the next general election.
Adeleke’s political choices could therefore become increasingly significant as parties reposition themselves for the 2027 contest.
