A Lagos resident, Oluwaseyi Oluwabiyi, has alleged that a filling station dispensed water into her vehicle’s fuel tank instead of petrol, causing the car to break down shortly after she left the station.
Oluwabiyi disclosed this in a testimonial video released on Wednesday by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), saying her vehicle stopped about 10 minutes after she left the filling station.
According to her, she contacted a mechanic who inspected the vehicle and discovered that there was no petrol in the tank, but water had been dispensed into it.
She subsequently reported the incident to LASCOPA and submitted photographs, videos and other evidence relating to the complaint.
Oluwabiyi said LASCOPA directed her to obtain an estimate of the repair cost before inviting her and the filling station for a mediation session.
She said the filling station was held responsible and was made to pay for the repairs as well as additional damages.
“My car was fixed. It was reinstated to the position it would have been before the incident,” she said.
Oluwabiyi commended LASCOPA for intervening in the matter, describing the agency as an important consumer-protection mechanism that can help resolve disputes without resorting to the courts.
She urged Lagos residents who encounter similar consumer-related problems to report them to LASCOPA for prompt intervention and resolution.
