Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria’s political and media landscape following the sudden death of Mr Dotun Oladipo, Publisher of The Eagle Online and one of the country’s most respected journalists, whose passing on August 25 has left a deep void in the nation’s media industry.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was among the first to react, describing Oladipo’s death at 56 as a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and the nation at large. The President’s tribute traced Oladipo’s journey from his years as Political Editor at The Punch, where he built a reputation for incisive political reporting, to his founding of The Eagle Online, a platform that came to symbolise the rise of digital journalism in the country. According to the President, Oladipo’s career embodied the watchdog role journalists play in deepening democracy, informing citizens and holding public office holders accountable. He extended condolences to the family, GOCOP colleagues and friends of the deceased, praying that his soul finds eternal rest.
Otunba Senator Gbenga Daniel, FNSE, FAEng, representing Ogun East Senatorial District and a former Governor of Ogun State, also paid tribute, describing the late publisher as a man of ideas, courage and rare generosity of spirit. In his condolence letter to the Oladipo family, the former governor recalled Oladipo’s formative years at the defunct Compass Newspaper, where he rose from Assistant Project Manager to Editor of Sunday Compass, distinguishing himself through intellect, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to the craft. Otunba Senator Gbenga Daniel noted that this dedication carried through to Oladipo’s later work as publisher of The Eagle Online, where he remained devoted to the advancement of the profession and the media’s place in society. He extended his condolences on behalf of himself, his family and associates, praying for the fortitude of the Oladipo family in bearing what he called an irreparable loss.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the news as shocking, painful and heartbreaking. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor condoled with Oladipo’s immediate and extended family, as well as the management and staff of Premium Eagle Media Limited, publishers of The Eagle Online. He also commiserated with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, and the Nigeria Guild of Editors, noting that Oladipo, a former GOCOP president, had left behind a legacy that helped shape the growth of online journalism in Nigeria. Reflecting on the unpredictability of life, the governor urged the media community to draw strength from the depth of the late publisher’s contributions rather than dwell solely on the brevity of his time. He recalled personal encounters with Oladipo during media engagements, describing him as brilliant, composed and persuasive whenever he spoke on issues affecting the profession.
