The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has warned the National Union of Edible Oil Tanker Drivers of Nigeria (NUEOTDN) against what it described as malicious attacks and misleading claims against the union.
NUPENG, in a statement signed by Comrade Tope Ajagbe, said its attention was drawn to allegations reportedly made by NUEOTDN and published in The Nation newspaper on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
The union described the allegations as false, misleading and capable of creating unnecessary tension within Nigeria’s petroleum products supply and distribution chain.
NUPENG urged the Federal Government, security agencies, regulatory authorities and other stakeholders to investigate what it called an attempt to undermine the country’s product distribution system.
The union also called on NUEOTDN to stop making what it described as unfounded allegations capable of damaging NUPENG’s reputation.
According to NUPENG, its leadership has repeatedly intervened to resolve disputes involving NUEOTDN and the Amalgamated Union of Wharf Truck Owners of Nigeria/Wharf 302 Products and Beverages Association of Tanker Drivers, whose members operate dedicated food-grade trucks.
NUPENG alleged that despite its efforts to facilitate peaceful resolution of the dispute, NUEOTDN had continued to reject reconciliation efforts and circulate what it described as misinformation.
The union maintained that its operations comply with applicable safety, environmental and regulatory requirements. It said it works with agencies including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to promote safety and regulatory compliance.
NUPENG added that its drivers undergo regular training, inspections and certification to ensure compliance with national and international standards.
The union said it condemned the allegations against it and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, integrity and the welfare of Nigerians.
NUPENG further called on relevant authorities and members of the public to disregard what it described as unsubstantiated claims and to allow regulatory agencies to address any genuine violations.
It also stressed that any petroleum tanker found being used illegally, particularly for the transportation or distribution of edible products, should be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
NUPENG said it would not protect or condone any of its members found to have engaged in illegal activities.
