The Deacon Chris Iyovwaye Campaign Council has strongly condemned the reported attack on a peaceful One Million Man March in Warri and Effurun, Delta State, demanding a full, transparent investigation by the Inspector General of Police, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a statement signed by Chief Mulade Alfred, Director General of the Deacon Chris Campaign Council and Delta State governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the council described the disruption of the political procession as a direct assault on the constitutional rights of Nigerians to freely associate, assemble, and participate in political activities.
Five Injured as March Is Disrupted in Warri
The march, organised by the Local Boys and Girls Movement Support Group in support of the Obi-Kwankwaso movement in Uvwie and Warri, Delta State, commenced at approximately 8:00 a.m. However, according to the organisers, suspected political thugs allegedly confronted participants shortly after the procession got underway.
Ambassador Young Piero, Convener of the Local Boys and Girls Movement Support Group, told the Campaign Council that incidents were reported at several locations, including Airport Road by Total, Airport Road by the traffic light/link road, Ogboroke in Warri, and Jakpa Junction, before the Refinery Junction.
The organisers allege that the attackers were armed with firearms and other dangerous objects, including bottles, knives, logs of wood, and stones, in what they described as a coordinated attempt to disrupt the peaceful political procession.
Suspect Reportedly Found with AK-47 at Jakpa Junction
At Jakpa Junction, the organisers reported that an individual identified as Collins Egbara was allegedly seen carrying an AK-47 rifle. According to their account, the individual was subsequently disarmed by participants and handed over to the police.
The organisers stated that five participants sustained injuries during the incident and were rushed to hospital for medical attention.
Campaign Council Calls for Immediate Investigation
The Deacon Chris Campaign Council has called on the Inspector General of Police, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, the DSS, and other relevant security agencies to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The council said the investigation should establish the circumstances that led to the reported attacks, the identities and affiliations — if any — of those involved, whether firearms or other weapons were used, the circumstances surrounding the reported recovery and handover of the AK-47 rifle, the number and nature of injuries sustained, and whether any individuals or groups organised or coordinated the attacks.
“We welcome the Delta State Government’s directive to security agencies to investigate the reported confrontation and ensure that anyone found culpable faces the law,” the statement said. “We urge the relevant authorities to ensure that the investigation is comprehensive, transparent, and conducted without fear or favour.”
A Stand Against Political Violence in Delta State
The Campaign Council reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful democratic participation and called on all members and supporters to remain peaceful, disciplined, and law-abiding while authorities establish the facts.
“Political differences should never become a justification for violence, intimidation, or the disruption of peaceful political activities,” the statement added. “The people of Delta State have the right to participate freely in democratic activities without intimidation, violence, or fear.”
Anyone found culpable through a credible investigation, the council insisted, must be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
