Mexico has formally approved the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the country, marking another step in his diplomatic posting under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, October 21, 2026, through his official X account, expressing gratitude to God following the approval by the Mexican government.
According to him, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, presented the diplomatic approval document, known as an agrément, to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The document was received by the ministry’s Director of Protocol, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.
An agrément is the formal approval granted by a receiving country for a proposed ambassador to represent another country. It is a key requirement in the diplomatic appointment process.
In his announcement, Omokri said Mexico had accepted his appointment as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States.
He also disclosed that his diplomatic responsibilities would extend beyond Mexico to include Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
This means he will represent Nigeria in the three Central American countries through concurrent accreditation, while maintaining his principal diplomatic base in Mexico City.
Expressing his appreciation for the development, Omokri wrote:
“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua, to the Director of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.”
How Omokri Emerged As Nigeria’s Ambassador
Omokri was among the ambassadorial nominees forwarded to the Nigerian Senate by President Bola Tinubu in November 2025 for screening and confirmation.
Other prominent nominees included former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The Senate screened and confirmed the nominees in December 2025, clearing the way for their subsequent diplomatic postings.
On March 6, 2026, President Tinubu approved the deployment of 65 ambassador-designates and high commissioners to various Nigerian diplomatic missions around the world.
Omokri was assigned to Mexico City as part of the deployment.
Mexico’s formal acceptance of his appointment represents an important step in completing the diplomatic process required for him to assume his ambassadorial responsibilities.
His assignment will involve representing Nigeria’s interests in Mexico and the three countries under his concurrent accreditation, while supporting diplomatic relations and cooperation between Nigeria and the respective nations.
