The German Embassy in Nigeria has warned Nigerians applying for visas against falling victim to fraudsters, stressing that no visa agent, intermediary or individual can guarantee visa approval.
The warning was issued by the German Missions in Abuja and Lagos through a series of public advisories on their official X account on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
The missions clarified that they do not work with visa agents and that all official information regarding visa applications, requirements, appointments and procedures is available free of charge on their website.
The embassy urged Nigerian applicants to ignore individuals or organisations claiming to have special connections within the German immigration system or the ability to influence visa decisions.
According to the missions, applicants should rely only on official information and contact the embassy or consulate directly whenever they need clarification about the application process.
The warning comes amid concerns over fraudulent visa agents who allegedly collect large sums of money from unsuspecting Nigerians by promising guaranteed visas, secured jobs in Germany, faster appointments or special access to embassy officials.
Some applicants reportedly pay millions of naira to intermediaries who claim they can arrange employment opportunities and secure the necessary travel documents. However, such promises may turn out to be false, leaving victims with significant financial losses.
The German Embassy stressed that visa approval is determined solely by the relevant authorities after assessing an applicant’s eligibility and supporting documents. Payments to agents or claims of having influential contacts cannot guarantee a favourable decision.
The missions also disclosed that they had received reports of applicants who paid substantial fees to agents promising them jobs and visas, only to discover that the assurances were misleading or fraudulent.
German Embassy Says Visa Appointments Are Free
The German Missions further reminded Nigerians that booking a visa appointment through the official channels is free.
Applicants were advised not to pay individuals who claim they can secure appointment slots or provide privileged access to the embassy’s booking system.
The embassy also cautioned applicants against sending their documents through email in an attempt to obtain appointments, noting that they should follow the procedures specified on the official platforms.
It further warned against relying on unofficial advice concerning the Consular Services Portal, explaining that the portal currently applies only to certain categories of long-stay national visas.
Official Websites For German Visa Applications
To avoid scams and misinformation, Nigerian applicants have been advised to use only recognised German government platforms for visa-related information and applications.
The official websites provided by the missions include:
- German Embassy in Nigeria: https://nigeria.diplo.de
- German visa and consular services portal: https://digital.diplo.de/visa
Applicants are encouraged to confirm the appropriate visa category for their intended purpose of travel, review the relevant requirements and follow the official appointment procedures.
Those who have questions about their applications should contact the German Embassy or the relevant consulate directly instead of relying on third-party agents.
The advisory forms part of the German Missions’ ongoing efforts to combat visa fraud, address misinformation and protect Nigerians seeking to travel to Germany for education, employment, business, tourism and other lawful purposes.
