The Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation (MDPCO) has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his claim that Nigeria has emerged from the economic “dark tunnel,” insisting that the country’s economic situation remains difficult and continues to worsen under his administration.

The organisation described the President’s statement as misleading, arguing that available economic indicators do not support his claim that the country is recovering from its economic challenges.

In a statement issued on Monday, the group’s Director of Strategic Communications, Richard Ihediwa, said it was unfortunate that Tinubu made the declaration while in Mecca, despite what it described as the widespread hardship facing Nigerians.

According to the organisation, more than 140 million Nigerians, representing about 63 per cent of the population, are living in poverty, while businesses continue to shut down and unemployment keeps rising.

It also claimed that over 60 million Nigerians are experiencing severe food insecurity, blaming the situation on the economic policies introduced by the Tinubu administration.

The campaign organisation further accused the Federal Government of failing to address the country’s worsening security challenges, noting that insecurity has continued to restrict people’s movement, farming activities and commercial operations across different parts of the country.

On the rising cost of living, the group expressed concern that petrol prices remain between N1,500 and N2,000 per litre, despite Nigeria being an oil-producing nation.

It argued that the high cost of fuel has contributed to rising inflation, increased the operating expenses of businesses and further weakened the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.

The MDPCO also raised concerns over Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit, which it estimated at $2.3 trillion. It said the country would need approximately $100 billion annually over the next 30 years to address the infrastructure gap.

The organisation equally criticised the administration’s borrowing activities, citing Nigeria’s national debt of N166.7 trillion and questioning the absence of what it described as verifiable investments capable of justifying the loans.

Describing Tinubu’s assessment of the economy as a sign that he had exhausted his ideas, the group maintained that the President had nothing more to offer Nigerians.

It also interpreted Tinubu’s statement in Mecca that political power belongs to God, who gives it to whoever He chooses and can also take it away, as an answer to the prayers of Nigerians seeking a change in leadership.

The campaign organisation subsequently called on Tinubu to withdraw from the 2027 presidential election and support the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde.

It described Makinde’s proposed Reset Nigeria agenda as a credible alternative capable of addressing the country’s challenges.

According to the group, the agenda focuses on creating economic opportunities, reducing the cost of living, improving national security, providing quality education, promoting accountable governance and strengthening national unity.
