The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has disclosed that fire outbreaks destroyed property worth approximately N800 million in Nasarawa State between January and November 2026, resulting in one death and the rescue of eight people.
The service also revealed that property valued at N1.3 billion was saved from destruction during the period, following about 97 emergency calls received across the state.
The Nasarawa State Controller of the Federal Fire Service, Commander Eno Kelechi Nwachukwu, disclosed the figures on Monday during the flag-off of the 2026 National Fire Week Awareness Campaign held at the Federal Secretariat in Lafia.
Nwachukwu reaffirmed the service’s commitment to responding promptly to fire emergencies but urged residents, business owners and market associations to take fire prevention more seriously and report emergencies without delay.
She stressed that preventing fire outbreaks should not be left to the Federal Fire Service alone, noting that individuals, families, businesses, government agencies and community organisations all have important roles to play in ensuring public safety.
According to her, fire safety requires collective efforts and active participation from every member of society to reduce the destruction of lives and property.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s campaign, “Building a Fire Resilient Nigeria: One Community at a Time,” Nwachukwu called for a change in approach from responding to fire incidents after they occur to taking preventive measures that can stop such disasters from happening.
She explained that a fire-resilient society is one where families, schools, businesses and industries are equipped with the necessary knowledge, resources and facilities to prevent fire outbreaks, respond effectively to emergencies and recover quickly when disasters occur.
The Nasarawa fire service chief warned that fire incidents could happen in government offices, residential buildings, markets, places of worship and other public facilities, making it necessary for residents to observe basic fire safety precautions.
She further disclosed that the service would intensify public awareness and education campaigns to educate residents about common fire hazards in homes and commercial establishments.
Nwachukwu said the initiative was aimed at reducing fire outbreaks, protecting lives and property, and encouraging communities across Nasarawa State to embrace a stronger culture of fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
