The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has reconnected power supply to the Federal Capital Territory Water Board following a disconnection prompted by more than a year’s worth of unpaid electricity bills.
In a statement released Saturday by Omede Odekina, AEDC’s Head of Brand Marketing and Corporate Communications, the power distributor said the disconnection came after repeated attempts to engage the Water Board over its mounting debt proved unsuccessful.
“The disconnection was a result of over one year of accumulated electricity debt by the FCT Water Board, despite multiple notices, consultations, and opportunities to regularize the account in accordance with regulatory provisions,” Odekina stated.
However, following public outcry and appeals from FCT residents, AEDC’s Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, authorized immediate restoration of power to ensure water services could resume across affected areas.
“This action reflects AEDC’s dedication to community welfare and recognizes that essential services affecting public health and safety must be protected,” the statement emphasized.
The reconnection comes with strings attached. AEDC has given the Water Board a two-week deadline to submit and begin executing a viable payment plan to clear its outstanding debt.
Odekina cautioned that failure to meet this requirement would compel AEDC to disconnect supply once again, in line with regulatory standards.
While emphasizing that disconnection is used only as a final measure, Odekina reaffirmed AEDC’s dedication to operating transparently, adhering to regulations, and providing reliable electricity services throughout the Federal Capital Territory.
