The All Progressives Congress has dismissed concerns about the growing number of politicians switching to the ruling party, arguing that the defections demonstrate trust in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking during a Tuesday interview on Arise Television, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, addressed questions about recent high-profile defections, including that of Kano State’s governor. He characterized the trend as politicians choosing to align with what he called a “resurging Nigeria” under Tinubu’s leadership.
“What you see is governors who have decided to join our party to identify with this resurging Nigeria that this President is clearly positioning Nigeria to be,” Morka explained.
He emphasized that the APC welcomes new members and rejects the idea of screening potential defectors. “We are happy, we are excited about people who join our party. We cannot be gatekeepers to filter out people who want to join our camp. We don’t do that because it is undemocratic,” he stated.
Responding to concerns that the defections might create a one-party state, Morka pointed to historical precedent. He noted that the Peoples Democratic Party previously governed with a similar number of state governors without threatening Nigeria’s democratic system.
“I was very active in the political world at that time and there was no spectre anywhere about a one-party state because the PDP had those numbers of governors. That’s not the case now, and I think we should not equate people joining our party with that mode,” Morka said.
