The All Progressives Congress in Lagos State has seized upon the decision of Abubakar Atiku Abubakar—son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—to join the ruling party, calling it a significant embarrassment for the elder statesman’s political standing.
In a statement released Thursday and titled “You Can’t Trust Atiku More Than His Son,” Lagos APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo characterized the younger Atiku’s departure from the African Democratic Congress as what he termed a “political earthquake.”
“This singular act has said more than a thousand press conferences ever could,” Oladejo stated. “When a man’s own son deserts his political judgment, repudiates his choices, and embraces an alternative path, Nigerians are entitled to ask what deeper indictment of credibility is required.”
The party spokesman went on to criticize the former Vice President’s political history, describing it as marked by frequent party changes and what he called transactional relationships. Oladejo traced Atiku’s movements from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Action Congress and back to the PDP before his current affiliation with the ADC.
According to the APC representative, the son’s decision represents more than personal choice—it signals what he described as “a generational rejection of recycled politics, expired ambitions, and leadership without conviction.” He framed the move as an endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Let it be said without equivocation: when credibility collapses at home, it cannot be rehabilitated in the marketplace of national politics,” Oladejo added, arguing that leadership unable to inspire loyalty within family circles cannot command broader national confidence.
The statement concluded by welcoming the younger Abubakar’s defection and suggesting Nigerians should “read the political handwriting on the wall,” declaring that what he called “political tourism” and “ambition without ideology” are losing relevance.
