ARISE News Channel has announced the tragic death of news anchor, reporter, and producer Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, 29, who was killed during an armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.
Maduagwu, affectionately known as “Sommie” by colleagues and viewers, was 29 years old. The Nigerian Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
In a statement released by management representative Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, ARISE News described Maduagwu as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family” and “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers.”
Beyond her broadcasting career, Maduagwu was a trained lawyer who brought professionalism and dedication to her work. Colleagues remember her as a supportive team member and friend to many within the organisation.
“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” the statement read.
The management and staff of ARISE News extended their deepest condolences to Maduagwu’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
The news organisation called for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of those responsible for the attack, expressing shock at the sudden loss of their colleague.
Maduagwu was born on December 26, 1995, and had become a familiar face to viewers of the television news channel before her untimely death.
