Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has said that the club has underachieved under Mikel Arteta.
He recently revealed that while he is not disappointed with the Spanish manager, it’s normal to ask questions.
Speaking during an interview on the Stick to Football podcast, Henry shared that even though the progress the team has made in recent years is very obvious, Arteta’s boys should’ve reached at least one final by now.
Henry noted that it is understandable for everyone to remain patient when the manager hasn’t fully settled in yet, but after 5 long years, Arsenal should be closer to winning trophies under Mikel’s management.
“I’m not saying that I’m disappointed with Arsenal, but it’s normal that people are raising questions now about what the team is doing
I understand that at the very beginning you arrive and it’s not your team. You need at the very least three or four transfer windows to change everything that you want to.
It takes time and you have to give a manager time to be able to implement what he wants to do.
For the last three years Arsenal have been in a situation where they should have at least brought one cup or [reached] a final,” he said.
Henry further stated that a club like Manchester United has still managed to reach 5 finals in the last five years despite being the subject of mockery since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
He concluded by saying that he’ll never fault fans and fellow pundits for asking questions because they have every right to.
“Manchester United have played in five finals in the last five years, the United that everyone laughs at – whereas for Arsenal in the last three years of building, they’ve not reached a final.
So I do understand when people ask the question: ‘Surely you should compete for a trophy?'” he added.
