Former England captain David Beckham and ex-Germany striker Jürgen Klinsmann have shared their early predictions for the 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026, highlighting England, Portugal, Brazil, and Japan among the leading contenders.
Beckham expressed strong confidence in England finally ending their long wait for a second World Cup title, saying it is “about time” the Three Lions win the tournament again after 60 years without success.
While backing England, Beckham also pointed to Japan as a possible surprise team, praising their discipline and strength as a well-organised squad capable of causing upsets on the global stage.
He noted that every World Cup produces unexpected breakthroughs from either players or teams, suggesting Japan could emerge as one of the tournament’s dark horses.
Meanwhile, Klinsmann named Portugal and Brazil as his top favourites for the title.
He argued that Portugal’s team unity, especially around captain Cristiano Ronaldo, mirrors the collective spirit that helped Argentina win the World Cup in Qatar.
Klinsmann, speaking on the Stick To Football podcast, also praised Portugal’s balance of experience and quality under coach Roberto Martínez.
He added that Brazil remains a strong contender, while England also possess the talent to win if they have enough belief and consistency throughout the tournament.
