The leadership of Computer Village, Ikeja, have started a biometric registration and enumeration exercise to ward off crimes and sanitize the market.
Market leaders recently shared that the biometric registration will help to restore investor confidence.
Speaking via a press statement, the Iyaloja, Abisola Azeez, described the initiative as part of a broader rebranding effort to tackle problems like phone theft, fake technicians, and counterfeit products.
Abisola disclosed that the latest development was deemed necessary after a recent security breach that almost led to the total shutdown of Computer Village by the Lagos State Task Force.
According to her, it took urgent intervention by market representatives to protect legitimate traders, and the realization of fatal security breaches led to a revamp of the rules governing the market.
Abisola confirmed that under the new rules, only vendors with registered ID cards displayed at their stalls will be allowed to operate.
“The market’s leadership announced the move after a recent security incident led the Lagos State Task Force to consider a complete shutdown.
However, market representatives intervened to safeguard legitimate traders. Under the new rules, only registered vendors with ID cards displayed at their stalls will be allowed to operate.
Approved street setups will be limited to plastic chairs, show glasses, and umbrellas, while wooden structures and open flames are banned to reduce fire hazards,” it read.
Adeniyi Olasoji, the Baba Oja, further noted that the market’s damaged reputation must be restored, stressing that the introduction of CCTV and emergency alert systems can provide the lasting solution traders need.
“Other leaders, including Prince Tony Nwakeze, Ralph Chibuzor, Ben Onuorah, Nofiu Akinsanya, and Ikani Tony, affirmed the move as essential for transforming Computer Village into a structured, globally competitive digital hub.
The registration will be completed within two months, after which only verified traders will be allowed to operate,” he added.
