Brazil international Bruno Guimaraes has completed a high-profile move to Arsenal from Newcastle United in a deal reportedly worth £75 million ($101.2 million).
The 28-year-old midfielder, who spent four-and-a-half seasons at Newcastle and eventually became club captain, has signed a long-term contract with the Gunners. British media reports indicate that the agreement is for four years, with an option for an additional season.
Guimaraes expressed his excitement about joining Arsenal and said he was determined to win trophies and create a lasting legacy at the club.
Speaking through Arsenal’s official media channels, he said he was delighted with the opportunity and believed the move represented an important new challenge in his career.
The midfielder revealed that his discussions with Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta immediately convinced him that the move was the right step.
“Since the first time I spoke to Berta and Mikel I was excited,” Guimaraes said.
He explained that, after representing Brazil at two World Cups, he felt ready for a new challenge and believed Arsenal offered the ideal environment to achieve his ambitions.
“I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it. I’m so excited to start,” he added.
Arsenal Strengthen Midfield With Guimaraes
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta described the arrival of Guimaraes as an important addition to the squad, highlighting his ability to operate in different midfield roles.
“With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team,” Berta said.
According to the Arsenal director, Guimaraes combines defensive strength with the ability to contribute in attack, having consistently provided goals and assists throughout his career.
Berta added that the Brazilian’s versatility would give Arteta more tactical options while increasing competition within the squad.
Guimaraes was previously linked with Arsenal in January 2022, but he eventually left Lyon for Newcastle.
During his time at St James’ Park, he made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals. He played a key role in Newcastle’s progress under former manager Eddie Howe, helping the club end a 56-year wait for a major trophy with victory in the 2025 League Cup.
He also contributed to Newcastle qualifying for the UEFA Champions League on two occasions.
Emotional Newcastle Departure
Guimaraes admitted that leaving Newcastle was one of the most difficult decisions of his career.
Reflecting on his time at the club, he said he was proud of the progress made during his spell in the northeast of England and developed a strong emotional connection with the supporters and the city.
“This is one of the toughest decisions of my life. When I arrived, the club was in a challenging position and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together,” he said.
“I fell in love with this place. I really mean that.”
His departure comes during a period of significant change at Newcastle. He is the third major player to leave the club ahead of the new season, following Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.
Former manager Howe also stepped down last week and has since been replaced by German coach Matthias Jaissle.
Competition for Arsenal Midfield Places
At Arsenal, Guimaraes will face competition for a starting position from established midfielders including Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino.
The signing represents Arsenal’s most prominent addition of the current transfer window so far, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Illan Meslier and forward Christos Tzolis.
Arsenal, who ended a 22-year wait for an English top-flight title last season, will hope Guimaraes can help strengthen their squad as they seek further domestic and European success.
The Gunners are scheduled to begin their campaign against Manchester City in the Community Shield before opening their league title defence against newly promoted Coventry.
Newcastle, meanwhile, will start their season against Liverpool at St James’ Park on August 23.
