A prayer and remembrance gathering has been scheduled for Monday, July 13, to mark the first anniversary of the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Buhari’s former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, who disclosed the plans in a post on his official X account.
According to Ahmad, the event will serve as an opportunity for family members, friends, political associates, former aides and other Nigerians to honour the late president’s life, leadership and contributions to the country one year after his death.
He said the gathering would focus on prayers and reflection, celebrating Buhari’s years of public service and his enduring legacy in Nigeria’s political history.
“On Monday, July 13, we will gather in solemn remembrance to honour the life, legacy and enduring service of our late boss, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, one year after his passing,” Ahmad wrote.
He described Buhari as a leader who dedicated his life to serving Nigeria with commitment, integrity, discipline and patriotism, adding that his contributions to national development would remain an important part of the country’s history.
Ahmad also said special prayers would be offered for Allah to forgive the late president’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus and continue to comfort his family, loved ones and the Nigerian people.
“May Allah grant him eternal rest. Ameen,” he concluded.
Muhammadu Buhari died on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness at a medical facility in London. Following his death, his remains were repatriated to Nigeria and laid to rest in his hometown of Daura in Katsina State.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023, after defeating then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 general election—becoming the first opposition candidate in the country’s history to unseat a sitting president through the ballot.
He secured a second term in office after winning the 2019 presidential election and completed his tenure in 2023.
The first anniversary remembrance is expected to attract members of Buhari’s family, former government officials, political allies, associates and supporters, who will gather to reflect on his leadership, public service and lasting impact on Nigeria.
