FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has blasted the culture of social media governance in Nigeria. He recently warned that no amount of online criticism would replace direct engagement with the government.
Speaking at the flag-off of Collector Road C01 in the Institution and Research District, a project linking the Body of Benchers complex to the Nile University corridor, Wike revealed that responsible citizens must channel demands through proper avenues, instead of constant online noise.
According to him, the Benchers’ measured approach forced President Bola Tinubu to approve funding for the project under emergency procurement, and they did not have to attack the government online to force a reaction.
He stated that the road, which will also serve Nile and Baze universities, would be completed within six months, making it one of the fastest-delivered projects under his administration.
“If you like, go 50 million times to social media, what you didn’t get through the door, you won’t get through the window. Good citizens call government’s attention to problems; they don’t play politics with social media,” he said.
Stressing that problems will never end for elected politicians, he maintained that no government can solve every problem.
He concluded by urging citizens to demand accountability responsibly and support government efforts like good Nigerians, rather than trigger cynicism online.
“Even if you allow me to stay here for 500 years, problems will continue to come up.
The important thing is to make your contribution so that history records you did your part,” he added.
