Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of NNPP leader Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has resigned as Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, days after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s rumored defection to the ruling APC.
The political landscape in Kano State has been shaken following the resignation of Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso from his position as Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development. The move comes amid swirling reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is abandoning the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mustapha, whose father Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso leads the NNPP and remains a vocal opponent of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, announced his departure from the state executive council on Monday in a carefully worded statement.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation as Honorable Commissioner, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and Member of the Kano State Executive Council,” he wrote, describing the choice as both difficult and necessary.
Despite the apparent political tensions, Mustapha thanked Governor Yusuf for the opportunity to serve. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the opportunity to serve the great people of Kano State,” he said, adding that he valued the experience gained during his tenure.
The departing commissioner expressed hope that youth empowerment and sports programs would continue despite his exit. “As I resign, I pray that the youth of Kano State will continue to receive the attention and support they deserve,” he stated, invoking divine blessings for the state’s future.
The timing of this resignation has intensified speculation about fractures within Kano’s political establishment. Senator Kwankwaso, a former two-time presidential candidate and ex-governor of the state, has built his political identity around opposition to the APC, making his son’s resignation particularly significant if the governor’s defection proves true.
Political observers see the younger Kwankwaso’s decision as a clear signal of loyalty to his father’s political philosophy and a rejection of any alignment with the ruling party that the Kwankwaso political dynasty has consistently opposed.
