Dele Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, has soared in popularity, currently ranking as the 622nd best seller on Amazon. The spike in sales follows heightened interest from Nigerians eager to delve into the controversial allegations the book makes about notable figures, including legal luminary Afe Babalola, and their alleged role in corrupting the country’s judicial system.
Oxley Technologies, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), highlighted the book’s surge in demand. “The winner in this debacle between Mr. Farotimi & Babalola will be Uncle Dele. His book is currently ranked 622 in Amazon Bestseller rankings. This comes with massive sales. They’ve ended up giving the book the publicity that wasn’t intended. Uncle Dele’s smiling to the bank,” the platform stated.
Another X user, Due Process Integrity Vanguard, described the development as “an incredible overnight success,” noting that the controversy has catapulted the book into the bestseller list.
Bookstores across Nigeria have also reported a rush for the book, with many running out of stock. Tinu-Ade Bookshop in Ibadan and VIC Bookstore in Abuja confirmed to Peoples Gazette that their copies sold out after news of Farotimi’s arrest made national headlines.
Farotimi, a human rights lawyer and activist, was arrested following a petition by Babalola (SAN) and was denied bail by the Ekiti State Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday. He has been remanded in custody until December 10, 2024, according to court documents (Charge Suit No. MAD/1,476.C/2024).
The unfolding legal battle between Farotimi and Babalola has drawn widespread attention, inadvertently boosting the book’s visibility and sales both locally and internationally.
