Elisha Abbo, a former Adamawa North Senator, disclosed that senators currently earn N29 million, asserting that the amount is inadequate for the demands associated with their roles. In an interview on Arise TV, Abbo shared that during his tenure in the ninth assembly, his total monthly salary and allowances amounted to N14.4 million.
“When I was in the Senate, all my allowances, including wardrobe and vehicle allowances, summed up to N14.4 million per month, with a base salary of N1 million,” he explained.
He noted that the current sum of N29 million, though seemingly substantial on paper, falls short when addressing the financial pressures senators face. Abbo also expressed that his decision to leave his private business for public service led to a decline in his wealth.
“I had to leave the company I founded to serve in government. The money allocated to my office was insufficient to meet the overwhelming demands from my constituents,” he said, citing instances where he covered medical expenses and other needs.
Abbo further alleged that while senators struggle with limited funds, some state governors receive up to N1 billion monthly for state responsibilities, highlighting a stark contrast in financial allocation.
“I am much poorer now as a politician than I was before entering public life,” Abbo concluded.
