President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation on Sunday, August 4, 2024, in response to ongoing protests across Nigeria that began on Thursday, August 1. The protests were sparked by widespread hardship experienced by citizens, leading to nationwide demonstrations.
Reports indicate that no fewer than 17 people have been killed by security agents during the protests, with numerous arrests made across the country. On Saturday, images and videos of protesters in Kano waving the Russian flag went viral, as demonstrators chanted in Hausa, “We don’t want bad government.”
Condolences and Call for Peace
President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the lives lost during the protests and made a heartfelt plea for an end to violence. “I commiserate with the families and relations of those who have died in the protests. We must stop further bloodshed, violence, and destruction,” Tinubu stated.
Suspension of Protests
The President called on protesters to suspend further demonstrations and engage in constructive dialogue, saying, “I hereby enjoin protesters and the organizers to suspend any further protests and create room for dialogue.”
Economic Reforms
Tinubu defended his administration’s controversial decision to remove fuel subsidies and reform the foreign exchange system, emphasizing that these actions were essential to “reverse the decades of economic mismanagement.” He assured Nigerians that these reforms were paving the way for a stronger economy.
Fiscal Improvements
Highlighting significant economic progress, Tinubu noted that “aggregate government revenues have more than doubled, hitting over N9.1 trillion in the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023.” This, he argued, was a sign of fiscal improvements under his leadership.
Infrastructure Development
The President also outlined ongoing major infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Highway, emphasizing their importance in boosting national development and connectivity.
Oil and Gas Sector Revival
Tinubu announced a revival in the oil and gas sector, with oil production increasing to 1.61 million barrels per day. He highlighted renewed investor interest as a positive sign for the sector’s future.
Compressed Natural Gas Initiative
In an effort to reduce transportation costs, the government has launched a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative, with plans to distribute one million conversion kits nationwide. This initiative aims to provide a cost-effective alternative to traditional fuel sources.
Youth Empowerment Programmes
Tinubu outlined several initiatives targeting youth empowerment, including a student loan scheme, the Digital and Creative Enterprises programme, and various skill development schemes designed to enhance employment opportunities for young Nigerians.
Housing Projects
The President announced ambitious plans to complete 100,000 housing units over the next three years as part of the Renewed Hope City and Estate initiative, aiming to address the country’s housing deficit.
Food Security Measures
In a bid to enhance food security, Tinubu revealed plans to boost food production. This includes the removal of tariffs on certain food items and the distribution of farming equipment to support local farmers.
President Tinubu concluded his address by urging unity and patience among Nigerians, stating, “Let us work together to build a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come. Let us choose hope over fear, unity over division, and progress over stagnation.”
