The National Identity Management Commission has successfully enrolled 59,786 inmates across several correctional centres in the country.
NIMC recently issued inmates at the different correctional centres National Identification Numbers.
This milestone was achieved in partnership with the Nigerian Correctional Service as part of ongoing efforts to guarantee inclusivity and extend identity management services to every Nigerian, including prisoners.
The initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which advocates for the enrollment of Nigerians and legal residents across the nation.
Speaking via a press statement, the Director-General and CEO of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said that about 74% of inmates have now been enrolled and issued with NINs.
According to him, the commission is already working on wrapping up registration for the remaining inmates, and it’ll keep collaborating with strategic partners to make sure every Nigerian and legal resident is captured eventually.
“The commission remains committed to collaborating with strategic partners to ensure that every Nigerian and legal resident is captured in the National Identity System, regardless of their circumstances,” he said.
NIMC also declared plans to start ward-level enrolment across Nigeria, an expansion that will take identity services closer to communities, while strengthening the national database.
Expressing its gratitude to the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his cooperation, NIMC appreciated the Comptroller-General of NCoS, Nwakuche Ndidi, and all correctional service personnel for aiding the smooth enrolment process.
As of May this year, NIMC has made major strides with its duty, enrolling more than 120 million Nigerians into its NIN database, with the target of covering approximately 95% of the population by the end of 2025.
