Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) has responded to the Federal Government’s withdrawal of criminal defamation charges filed against her, describing the development as a vindication of her stance.
Speaking after the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory struck out the case on Wednesday, the senator expressed renewed faith in Nigeria’s judicial system.
“Today’s outcome affirms my belief in the rule of law. I remain committed to serving my constituents and defending the democratic rights of all Nigerians,” she stated.
The senator thanked her legal team, constituents, and supporters for standing by her during the legal proceedings.
The FCT High Court dismissed the case following a notice of discontinuance filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. The charges, which ignited public discourse on freedom of speech and political accountability, arose from remarks the senator allegedly made during a television interview.
The discontinuance notice, dated December 12, 2025, ended proceedings in suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025.
Justice C. N. Oji, who presided over the matter, acknowledged the notice and struck out the charges. He emphasized the importance of exercising prosecutorial discretion responsibly.
“The court hopes that this decision will pave the way for restraint, healing, and respect for the rule of law in our democratic process,” Justice Oji remarked.
Federal Government counsel confirmed the withdrawal in court, explaining that the notice was filed under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
“This decision is taken in the overall interest of justice and public confidence in the legal system,” the counsel said.
