Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IE) sheds light on the recent power supply disruptions affecting parts of Lagos State and the entire nation, attributing the issue to the temporary shutdown of Egbin Power Station. Apples Bite Magazine has learned that the closure, initiated for critical maintenance on a key gas pipeline, is impacting approximately 16% of the total electricity supplied to the National Grid.
Egbin Power Station, situated in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State and renowned as one of the largest thermal power stations in Nigeria, has been temporarily halted to facilitate essential maintenance work on its gas pipeline.
This pipeline, responsible for supplying gas to the facility, is undergoing crucial maintenance conducted by the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC).

In an official announcement made on Wednesday via its social media handle, Ikeja Electric apologized for the inconvenience caused by the power supply disruption. The statement read, “Please be informed that the current power supply disruption is a result of the ongoing maintenance work on the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) gas pipeline supplying gas to Egbin Power Generation Company. Consequently, this has led to a temporary shutdown of the plant, resulting in extensive load shedding nationwide. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this situation.”
The temporary shutdown, which commenced at 11:13 hours on December 18, 2023, is expected to last for three days. During this period, there will be a substantial reduction in the national power grid’s capacity, as the Egbin Power Station boasts an installed capacity of 1320MW, making it the largest electricity provider in Nigeria.
The nation is urged to bear with the inconvenience during this essential maintenance period, as the power company works to ensure the integrity and efficiency of the gas pipeline, ultimately contributing to the long-term reliability of the national power supply.
