The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the closure of its Situation Room following the conclusion of the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election and the declaration of Governor Ademola Adeleke as the winner.
The INEC Situation Room served as the central monitoring and coordination centre for the election, providing oversight of the electoral process across the state.
Adeleke, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), secured 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 444,815 votes.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
Following the declaration of the results in the early hours of Sunday, August 16, INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, announced the formal closure of the Situation Room.
Amupitan described the conclusion of the exercise as successful and commended INEC officials for their dedication, professionalism and sacrifices throughout the election.
He praised staff at the commission’s headquarters, the Osun State office, local government offices, polling units and technical teams for their contributions to the conduct of the election.
The INEC chairman also acknowledged the personal sacrifices made by many members of staff, noting that some worked under difficult conditions and spent considerable time away from their families to ensure the election was successfully conducted.
According to him, the experience gained from the Osun election would be useful in strengthening the commission’s preparations for the 2027 General Election.
Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to professionalism, transparency and neutrality in the discharge of its responsibilities.
He urged staff to remain dedicated to their duties and recognise the critical role of the electoral commission in protecting Nigeria’s democratic process.
“Let us learn from our experience, refine our strategies and approach the upcoming national task with renewed vigour and absolute neutrality,” he said.
The INEC chairman further urged officials to remain steadfast in their responsibilities as the commission begins preparations for the next major electoral assignment.
