Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has reportedly launched missile and drone strikes against two United States military installations in Jordan, following US attacks on Iranian military launchers on Larak Island.
The IRGC said its Aerospace Force carried out the attacks against the King Hussein and Al-Azraq airbases, where American military equipment and fighter aircraft are reportedly stationed.
According to the Iranian military, the strikes targeted technical, maintenance and military facilities at the two bases.
The attacks came shortly after US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island, a strategically important location near the Strait of Hormuz. US officials reportedly said the launchers were being prepared to fire rockets capable of deploying naval mines in the vital waterway, through which a significant share of global oil shipments passes.
Iran said several of its fighters and civilians were killed or injured in the American strikes. Tehran condemned the US action as aggression and vowed to retaliate against American military positions across the region.
Following the Iranian attacks, Jordan said its forces intercepted several missiles that entered the country’s airspace.
The latest exchange has heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and raised concerns that the confrontation could develop into a broader regional conflict. Both sides have warned that additional attacks could follow.
The security of the Strait of Hormuz has also come under renewed scrutiny because of its importance to global energy supplies.
There was no immediate independent assessment of the extent of damage or casualties resulting from the Iranian strikes on the US bases in Jordan.
