Methodist Archbishop, Dr Sunday Onuoha, has urged President Bola Tinubu to avoid anything that would make Nigeria drift towards being a one-party state.
He recently revealed that there is a clear need to preserve the country’s multi-party democracy.
Speaking with the press in Abuja, Onuoha warned that any attempt to make Nigeria a one-party state would amount to a clear betrayal of public trust.
According to him, rather than allow any democratic setback, Tinubu’s advisers should realize that it is their job to uphold democratic values while resisting any temptation to nudge the president towards authoritarian tendencies.
“President Tinubu has long been recognised as a steadfast advocate of democracy. It would be a betrayal of public trust if any of his advisers were to influence him into embracing the dictatorial tendencies of a one-party state,” he said.
The Archbishop insisted that Nigeria’s democratic system can only thrive through diversity of parties and opinions.
Dr Sunday Onuoha concluded by saying that a multi-party system is absolutely key for the survival and growth of our democracy in our country.
“A multi-party system is both healthy and essential for the survival and growth of our democracy. Leaders must remain committed to democratic principles and avoid any actions that could weaken public confidence in our institutions,” he added.
