Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami was taken into custody by Department of State Services operatives in Abuja on Monday following a visit to Kuje Correctional Centre.
The senior advocate was apprehended outside the prison facility moments after completing his visit. Social media footage captured Malami approaching what appeared to be a DSS vehicle, where he requested officers show their official credentials before entering.
Security officials speaking anonymously confirmed the detention relates to multiple complaints alleging terrorism financing activities.
“Multiple petitions have been filed against Abubakar Malami regarding alleged terrorism financing,” a security source stated. “These are serious charges that carry global implications.”
The source emphasized the gravity of such accusations, noting that during his tenure as the nation’s top law officer, Malami himself publicly pledged that government would prosecute anyone connected to terrorism or its funding without favoritism.
“No administration can ignore substantial allegations of financing terrorism, regardless of an individual’s position or prominence,” the source added, referring to the former minister’s case.
Officials explained that transferring suspects between security agencies represents standard procedure during investigations. The DSS holds legal authority for terrorism-related probes in Nigeria, according to the source, who urged allowing the agency to complete its work.
