Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, has revealed the deeply personal story behind her establishment of the Bruce Mayrock Memorial Foundation, describing how she honoured her late husband’s dying wish to immortalise a young American who sacrificed his life for Biafra.
A Deathbed Promise Kept
In an emotional memorial day tribute, Minister Ojukwu disclosed that during the final days of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu’s life, the former Biafran leader was consumed by one overriding concern: ensuring the world would never forget Bruce Mayrock, a 20-year-old American who died protesting the Nigerian Civil War.
Speaking about her husband’s condition following his stroke, Ojukwu recounted a conversation that would shape her mission for years to come. “During the days following the stroke, which would eventually take his life, one issue weighed heavily on Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu’s mind,” she explained.

The Ultimate Sacrifice: Bruce Mayrock’s Story
On this day in 1969, Bruce Mayrock made the ultimate sacrifice in front of the United Nations Building in New York, setting himself ablaze in the early morning hours to draw global attention to what he viewed as genocide against the Biafran population during the Nigerian Civil War.
According to Minister Ojukwu, Mayrock’s family revealed that the young American had been actively campaigning against the war, writing numerous letters to the U.S. President and other government leaders, desperately seeking intervention to prevent what he believed would be the systematic elimination of millions of Biafrans.
“In utter frustration that no one appeared to be listening, he chose to draw the attention of the world to the tragedy in Biafra, the only way he felt he could do so…by sacrificing his own life,” Ojukwu explained.
A Soldier’s Final Words
The minister shared the haunting final conversation with her dying husband, describing how she attempted to reassure him that he would recover and complete the memorial project himself. His response, she said, “destabilised” her.
“‘I am a soldier,'” she quoted him as saying, “‘the only mode of death I am conditioned to anticipate is either death at the battlefield or by execution…I never expected to get this far. If I don’t make it, do what you can…our people must never forget….'”
The former Biafran leader’s premonition proved accurate—he did not survive. However, his widow was determined to ensure his final wish would become reality.
Memorial Dream Becomes Reality
Following her husband’s death, Minister Ojukwu began the challenging process of bringing his vision to life. Beginning in 2017, she embarked on the construction of what would become the Bruce Mayrock Memorial Building, a project that took several years to complete.
The memorial stands as a three-story edifice featuring multiple functional spaces, including a conference hall, exhibition floor, and memorial hall, serving both as a tribute to Mayrock’s sacrifice and a practical space for continuing his legacy of advocacy.
Foundation’s Mission and Impact
The Bruce Mayrock Memorial Foundation operates as a charitable, non-profit organisation with a comprehensive mission focused on youth empowerment and community development. The foundation’s programs include:
- Capacity Building Initiatives: Comprehensive skills development programs
- Entrepreneurship Training: Business development and startup support
- Youth Guidance and Counselling: Mentorship and personal development services
- Leadership Development: Inspiring the next generation of community leaders
- Peace Promotion: Conflict resolution and community harmony initiatives
According to Minister Ojukwu, the foundation’s ultimate goal is to “inspire a new generation of leaders to make a positive impact through peace promotion and community development in honour of Bruce Mayrock’s courageous legacy.”
A Legacy of Sacrifice and Remembrance
In her Memorial Day message, Minister Ojukwu emphasised the enduring significance of both Mayrock’s sacrifice and her husband’s determination to honour it. “Brother Bruce, we will never forget,” she declared, extending her remembrance to all who died during the conflict.
The establishment of the memorial foundation represents more than just the fulfilment of a dying wish—it stands as a testament to the power of individual sacrifice and the importance of preserving historical memory. Through her work, Minister Ojukwu has ensured that Bruce Mayrock’s name and sacrifice will continue to inspire future generations.
The story also highlights the international dimension of the Nigerian Civil War, demonstrating how the conflict touched lives far beyond Nigeria’s borders and inspired solidarity from unexpected quarters, including a young American willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for a cause he believed in.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with questions of unity, peace, and reconciliation, the Bruce Mayrock Memorial Foundation serves as a reminder of the cost of conflict and the importance of working toward a more peaceful future.
