Background into her business empire, work in the UK
My journey started in the UK, where I initially worked as a Project Coordinator at Greenwich Council’s Housing Department, helping people with homelessness. In 2007, I lost my papers, which marked a significant turning point in my life. I had to take on a job as a carer, earning minimum wage—something far removed from my prior experience.
However, my mother always said, “Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well.” That principle guided me as I progressed from a junior carer to a senior role, eventually becoming a Care Coordinator and, later, a Manager. I invested in myself by completing vocational training in health and social care, which positioned me as an expert in my field.
In 2016, I finally registered my care company, despite numerous challenges, including a legal battle with my former employer. Today, we operate multiple branches catering to clients with learning disabilities, autism, mental health issues, and challenging behaviour.
Her Major breakthrough
The major breakthrough came during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it was a challenging time, we took in clients whom others turned away due to fears of the virus. The government’s loan for care organizations also helped us stay afloat and expand. Despite the risks, it was a turning point for the company’s growth.
Number of branches in Operation
We now have several branches, including units for mental health care, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and respite care. After my husband passed, I opened another branch for Autistic Spectrum Disorder. While the journey has had its setbacks, including losing a key facility, we’ve continued to rebuild and expand.
Fashion Inspiration
My passion for fashion started in the UK, where I loved blending Ankara with suits. This inspiration, rooted in showcasing African heritage, led to the creation of ESTRE Afrocentric. Although 90% of my attention remains on my care business, I’m working to establish a fashion shop in London by next year.
Challenges Faced Doing Business in Nigeria
Initially, I wasn’t fully involved, which led to mismanagement and almost brought the business to bankruptcy. It’s been a tough experience, but now that I’m back, things are improving.
Vision for her Fashion Line
The Nigerian branch will soon operate from a dedicated property, while the UK branch will share a building with my care centre. My goal is to represent Africa through my fashion and care businesses while expanding into real estate with short-let properties.
