Popular Yoruba actor Ganiu Nafiu, widely recognized by his screen name Alapini Osa, has sparked conversation after publicly backing President Bola Tinubu for an extended stay in power, arguing that Nigeria’s deep-rooted challenges may require more time than two terms allow.
Speaking during an interview with fellow actor Kunle Afod that has since circulated widely online, the veteran screen star known for his roles in productions such as Apesin, Eegun, Aiye, and Koto Aye appealed to Nigerians to exercise patience with the current administration.
“If God did not have a purpose for Nigeria through him, He would not have made him president,” the actor said in Yoruba, adding his belief that Tinubu was placed in office to accomplish something meaningful and was already working toward it.
Alapini Osa painted a vivid picture of the complexities facing any leader at Aso Rock, describing the Presidential Villa as a place riddled with competing and powerful interests that have at times worked against the President’s agenda. He acknowledged that the administration has since recalibrated its approach to tackling insecurity across the country.
While floating the idea of a third term to fully address national problems, the actor was quick to concede its legal impossibility. “Although I know that a third term is not possible, let him complete his eight years first, and we will see the outcome,” he said, expressing confidence that Nigerians would have reason to smile once that period concludes.
He also praised the contributions of First Lady Remi Tinubu and the President’s son, Seyi Tinubu, saying their involvement in national affairs has bolstered the administration’s efforts.
Notably, Alapini Osa had previously gone on record regretting his active campaign for Tinubu ahead of the 2023 presidential election — making his latest remarks a notable shift in tone.
